Recruiters See Increased Demand for Experienced Associates

Law firms across California seem to be ratcheting up their associate hiring -- if ever so slightly.

Delia Swan, a Southern California legal recruiter whose three-person shop focuses on associates as well as partners, says firms are beginning to call her to fill associate positions. The sweet spot, she says, is for those with three to six years of experience. "Firms are starting to call us," Swan said. "Almost every day I get new jobs."

It's a difference from the start of the year, when Swan said she might go a week without getting a job call. "We're seeing it in corporate areas, which means the money is starting to flow," she said. Much of the demand has been for lawyers with experience in energy, environmental, IP litigation, health care and regulatory compliance matters.

The news isn't all good, though. Swan says the job market for fresh grads remains dismal, and she still gets calls from people who are getting the pink slip, particularly at smaller firms.

To help lawyers take charge of their careers, Swan has launched a series of blogs with tips for creating a resume, setting career goals and developing business, among other topics. She also has a 10-day guide to building a book.

And she's feeling bullish enough to be interviewing to fill two recruiter positions at Swan Legal Search. "I need people to help me out. I can't do it alone."
